Entry permalink Quick Reflections -- Second Project -- Posted by Uncorked

So, I made my first small quilt last month. You can read a little bit about it and see a picture at my journal site. Then, I decided that I wanted to make more quilts. So, I went on a big of a spending binge. Bought a sewing machine, bought Electric Quilt 5, bought various other small items. Cleared a space in the recroom as a quilting space (pictures of that later when it's finished), ordered a bunch of books, and I'm on my way!

So, some quick reflections. First: EQ5. Totally. Rules! I designed about half a dozen quilts or so the first day I had it, a couple of which may actually end up instantiated in fabric. The sewing machine is fine (I mean, what would I know, really, since I'd never used a sewing machine before last month), although I'm having trouble attaching the quarter-inch foot, which is annoying me.

I really like that for the most part working in a quilting project is a stateless activity. That is, I don't need huge blocks of time to make progress. This bodes well. I can't wait to finish setting up the quilting corner.

So, I'll probably elaborate on these various topics and more over time, but now, I have finished the quilt top for my practice quilt! I designed it (very simple design) in EQ5. I didn't find the fabrics I'd used for the design, but found some that were close. Here's the top.

A couple more pics can be found here. Impressions: I like making my own designs and just figuring out all the cutting and piecing on my own. I'm not so good with points, but did better at this one than the first quilt. I'm also not so good with the even sewing, which resulted in a couple of this quilt's major flaws. Oh well, again, it's better than the first one. Practice, practice!

More soon...
