Entry permalink Inspiration -- Posted by Uncorked

There are some incredibly inspiring quilts at Amish Country Lanes. I get lots of design ideas by just browsing around there.

In fact, my current design for the quilt codenamed Wee One came from there. However, it uses a drunkard's path block. How hard is that to do, really?

Drunkard's path blocks aren't that hard, you just need to pin a lot. You'll have to make (or buy) templates for the pieces and cut them out. You snip the concave curved pieces (cut little 1/8" lines in the seam allowances). Match the middles of the convex and concave pieces and pin. Then pin close to either edge. Pin a few more times between the middle and edge pins, then sew the seam. Might take a little practice, but not hard.

Thanks for posting the url. I've bookmarked it and will definitley have to go back there again. :>

I decided I wanted to do a Drunkards Path based quilt after reading part of Mary Mashuta's book Confetti Quilts. She has a lot of interesting quilts using that basic block. I thought it would be perfect for the stash of Japanese themed fabrics I have. I ordered the Drunkards path rulers from Creative Grids because they have the no slip dots on the back. When I got them they turned out much smaller than I had expected. (I was expecting something larger than 5 inches I believe they are more like 3 inches.) So I'll either need to work smaller than planned or vary it or something. Haven't gotten that far yet. ;>

I couldn't find a picture of Wee Ones, do you have one posted? I loved Kilter berrys and many of your designs. They look great. :>

Hi Wendy -- if I recall correctly, "Wee Ones" is the same as Kilter Berry. Kilter Berry was the name of the design, and Wee Ones is what I was planning to name the quilt. However, I never did make that one because I realized that I am years and years from being able to do any kind of curves properly! I still can't even sew straight!

Sewing straight can be a challenge for me too on some days ...but wouldn't that mean curves will be easier? ;> I've seen people selling special sewing machine feet that are supposed to help you sew curves perfectly without pinning. One was dicussed a couple of weeks ago on the info-eq mailing list over at http://patchwork.com. (The subject line menitoned curves.) But if you have the patience for pinning it does look manageable. :>

Entry permalink B Block Bound! -- Posted by Uncorked

I did the binding on the B block tonight, so it's basically finished. I haven't done a label for any of the 3 quilts I've made so far, so they're not quite complete in my mind, but close! The binding went a little bit better this time, but I stilll had some problems. I really think I'm going to need to take a class or two on some of this stuff.

I've bound about 8 quilts now. I bought the Fons and Porter laminated sheet on bindings and find that a great help when I do bindings. They step you through how to get the ends to join up perfectly. Since I've usually forgotten how I did it in between quilts I'm always going back to the sheet.
Here is the url for it at their site.
