Entry permalink RLJA Revealed! -- Posted by Uncorked

Ok! I have given away the quilt codenamed Rose Petal and can now discuss it openly. This was a quilt for my ~niece (not blood-related, but mentally adopted) and namesake (my first name is her middle name) on her first birthday. The actual name of this quilt is RLJA because I used letter blocks (her initials) in its design, just as I did for BRB (another niece). I've been revealing progress on this quilt to the Quilty Queue in bits and pieces. I shall now reveal all here!

First, here's the original design:

I never did find the light blue fabric, but I found an approximation that was somewhat softer, but with little silver stars on it. The quilt is designed to be about 5 feet by 5 feet - lap-quilt sized or good for a wall hanging or just to throw on top of a bed.

Here are a couple of pictures of the blocks in progress:

Here's a picture of the top of the quilt, before I had done the last border:

What I found is that big pieces of fabric mean that it was very easily wrinkled as I worked on it. Oh well. It's a blanket, ultimately, not a sheet!

After I did the backing, basting, quilting, and binding, my cat Myskza decided that she needed to inspect it.

I posted pictures of the back of the quilt in an earlier Quilty entry.

As usual, the basting, quilting, and binding was the worst. I decided to just quilt inside some of the shapes (mainly the dark blue squares and triangles in the center 'sashing' and the big white triangles. As I mentioned, since this one is primarily made of large pieces of fabric, it has a loose feel and wrinkles quickly and easily. Can't be helped given the tools I have available to me. But, it feels nice and even though just a cursory inspection screams "amateur hour," I think it's pretty cool.

Whew. That was quite a bit of work over all. Once again, I find that one thing I really like about quilting is that it's easy to set things down and then pick them up again later, and to work in small bits of time here and there. Here are a few more pictures for good measure, including RLJA herself opening and inspecting the goods.

I actually commented under various projects on this one...in addition-I think Rose will love on this quilt enough that it will wear out and you will have to make another :-)
