Entry permalink Magazines -- Posted by Uncorked

I've somehow (gosh, I can't imagine how) ended up on various quilting marketing mailing lists and so I get offers for magazines and quilting books and other fun things now and then. I like to keep catalogs because often there are pictures or color combinations in there that are inspiring. Earlier this year I subscribed to two quilting magazines: The Quilter and American Patchwork and Quilting from Better Homes and Gardens. I'm going to continue getting The Quilter -- invariably there was a design in there that I really liked. But, I'm going to cancel the other because I just never really enjoyed it. It feels mass-produced and is just not very inspiring to me. Your mileage may vary of course.

At a bookstore the other day, I found a new-to-me magazine that I bought an issue of and have decided to subscribe to: The Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. In addition to interesting designs and patterns, they also keep track of various quilting events and festivals around the country. It looks like another good, high-quality periodical and I'm looking forward to reading more of it in the coming months.

I really like Quilters Newsletter Magazine. The March '04 issue has an article (the beginning of a series) about quilting math that I found really interesting. I think the charts will be handy to have around.

Hmm. The one I picked up was Jan/Feb -- my subscription order probably won't get there in time to get the March edition mailed to me, so I may have to stop by the bookstore and pick up another copy off the newsstand! :)

The Quilter magazine has improved since I first looked at it years ago-I buy an issue once in a while. My subscribe to Quilters Newsletter/McCall's, Fons & Porter, American Patchwork and Quilting, and Quiltmaker. I pick up American Quilter on occasion or other magazines if they really have something of interest. I was going to go through them and just cut out those articles that interested me the most-but-after my friend dragged out several huge stacks of older issues, I realized my taste had changed over the years...and now I don't know that I want to do that after all. But, the stacks are getting too space consuming-so I am going to have to do something. I think they are often more bang for the buck than many books.

Yeah, I'm keeping all of my quilt magazines and most of the quilt catalogs that I get -- never know when I'll flip through one and be inspired by something. But I recognize that space might become a problem eventually....

I also agree that some of the magazines do seem to offer more than many books.
