Entry permalink And then there were six -- Posted by Katxena

Today I finished another double sawtooth star block for the quilt I'm making for my brother & his fiance -- that makes six of nine.

six sawtooth star quilt blocks

The star I finished today is the bottom center star. It looks a lot different from the others -- the background blue is more intense than the others and I didn't use any yellow at all.

From the beginning of this project, I have assumed that I will probably have to make more than nine of the double stars -- I don't think I'll be able to use them all, since I'm not planning out the color arrangements ahead of time. So I'm reserving judgement on this star until later, but I'm not sure it will make the final cut.

Wow! Those are cool. This is going to be a striking quilt!

And endless points, too! :)

Yummy! I think this is looking great. And yes, if you are going to have more blocks, the all blue block will offer a diversion from all of the blocks being blue and yellow. I didn't see the more intense blue in the background as 'out-of-character', but I do like scrappy quilts!

I didn't want to do this, but I'm seriously considering adding some sashing between the blocks. I think the blocks might look a bit nicer if they aren't all squashed together, and I wouldn't have so many points all coming together in the same place.

I'm undecided about that though.

If you add sashing, you will lose that secondary design element-which is a nice feature of this pattern. Great star pattern-looking forward to seeing the end result.

I dunno, I'm always partial to sashing, myself. Also, the thought of trying to line up all those points terrifies me. :)

Ah ha! How about... pieced sashing!!!! *evil cackle*

Lyn, I'm sure it won't surprise you to learn this, but I already thought of that! I was thinking of 1/2x1 inch rectangles -- but I think that is too much, even for me.

I'm seriously thinking about the sashing. I did some measuring last night, and my sewing obviously isn't as exact as I'd like it to be -- I think it would be very difficult to make all these points come together. Some of them are way off. I would prefer to preserve the secondary patterning, but I think the result would be a bit messy.

I'm still mulling it.

I would then say sashing is the way to go if you don't want the stress of matching or knowing that there would be non matching :-) issues.

Finished is a good thing...I am sure you learned a lot from this project...and they look great-the main thing is to feel good about what you have done!

Entry permalink My first quilt -- Posted by Katxena

I finished my first quilt top in December 2003 and finished the quilting in the first week of January 2004. I think it's pretty cute. It is 26x26 inches, and it hangs over the fireplace in my living room.

I call it "Tulips Out of Season" because the colors make me think of Fall rather than Spring. I made it from a kit I bought at JoAnn's. If I ever use a kit again, I won't rely so much on the instructions -- I kept thinking I should do things differently, but decided to blindly follow the directions instead, and I'm not completely satisfied with the result.

Entry permalink "Baby Steps II" -- Posted by Uncorked

"Baby Steps II" is finished now. It's approximately 28 inches by 28 inches. The first three quilts of 2004 are done!

Not sure what I'm going to tackle next, but I think it might be bargello placemats using instructions from one of the books I have.

Entry permalink Bindings -- Posted by Uncorked

As I continue to search for the magic words that will help me with bindings, I came across this page at Quilter's Cache which has some fairly decent illustrated instructions.

I'm beginning to think that many of my problems result from inexperience sewing more than anything to do with quilting in particular, actually.

I'm hoping to finish the binding on the last baby quilt this weekend and then figure out what I'm going to tackle next - besides continuing to work on Jo Threads...
