Entry permalink Commission I Update -- Posted by Uncorked

It's time for me to get serious about commission I, now that the auction quilt is done and my houseguests are gone. Here is the sample block I did for the client based on fabrics she chose.

She wants to change it slightly. Instead of using four different yellows, she just wants to use the exterior two, and alternate them all the way to the center. Thus, the final design will be something like:
It's a little bit stripier than I would have done it, but I think with these fabrics it will be a very bold and rich effect when it's done. I'm going to do another sample block and show it to her before doing all the chain piecing just to be sure it's what she wants. The top should go together reasonably quickly, since it's a pretty simple pattern.

Very stunning quilt. I like the fabric choices. The dark burgandy looks remakably familiar. I think I may have use that in my brothers wedding quilt. :>

I really like the colors. It looks like Autumn.

I think it looks great and I don't think it will look as "stripey" in real life as it does in the mockup.

I love the colors and the effect. It's gorgeous.

I know I used it in a watercolor bargello quilt I am just finishing -- love the color combo -- was the original color idea yours? or the clients?

She said she wanted something that had a lot of reds in it, so I came up with a red/cream idea. Couldn't find good cream-colored fabrics, so switched to red with gold/yellow. We spent some time with a Jinny Beyer fabric palette too, and she narrowed down to the colors you see here, but then didn't like the lighter yellows in the sample block.

I hope Joni's right, that it won't look as stripey. And I'm still constantly amazed at how much better and more dramatic quilts look in real fabric in real size when finished than how the look in EQ, even when I use fabric prints instead of solid colors in EQ.

So, I'm excited to see the top of this quilt finished. I'm hoping it will be dramatic and stunning.

Entry permalink Two New Fabrics -- Posted by Uncorked

On an impulse the other day I ordered a couple new fabrics from Hancock's just for fun. I don't know what I'm going to do with them yet, but I thought they were neat. This lighthouse fabric was on sale and I've been eyeballing the Christmas kitty fabric forever.

I love the Christmas Kitty fabric! One of my projects that has been put on hold is quilted Christmas gift bags. My husband hates to wrap gifts, and we can't use ribbon because one of our cats eats it, so I've decided I want reusable gift bags in various sizes to take care of our intra-household wrapping needs. People outside the household will still get giftwrap (sans ribbons).

Oo. Excellent idea!! Do you have a pattern or will you be making it up as you go along? I can dig up the exact product number for the fabric if you want. I found it at Hancock's and I think I kept the receipt. Or search on 'christmas kitty' or something like that.

I was planning on making up the pattern, based on the sizes of stuff we usually give each other. In my head, I was using these as a guide: drawstring bag, crazy quilt treasure-pouch and a pattern that was on Martha Stewart Living that I can't find for sewing a square envelope for CD's.

I have a stash of Christmas fabric, so I don't really want to add more, but... I might have to.

Oh also -- my plan was to quilt some of these so that they would have a bit of padding, and to use scraps of batting for "tissue paper".

Did you see the Chritmas Kitty Medley over at http://keepsakequilting.com?

(Oh no! I must be getting worse. It's bad enough that I go shopping with my sister-in-law and mother-in-law and get them in "trouble" buy helping them find things they like but now I'm doing it with my favorite bloggers too! :> It must be a sickness ;> I have to share the happiness. :>)

I had seen the Christmas kitty Medley, but was trying to avoid thinking about it, since I don't think I'll get around to making any of the Christmas quilts I have in mind until late '05 or maybe even '06. If only I could win the lottery.... but I suppose I'd have to buy a ticket, first!
