Entry permalink WV Quilts -- Posted by Lyn

My husband and I spent a weekend at resort in West Virginia a few weeks ago. They display and sell quilts in their main building and I snapped a couple of pictures of what they had out. Here's one.

I wasn't really taken with any of these quilts, but I was astonished at how cheaply they were selling them. $125, $225 - that range. Maybe the fabric I buy is too expensive, but I don't see how that can even cover the cost of materials. I would have expected these quilts to be sold for at least twice what they were asking.

I finally got back to working on the Christmas stack-and-slash quilt. It's coming out all wacky, but I kind of like it. I haven't been as careful or thoughtful about how I'm putting it together, so there are a few places where different combinations might have been better. But, so far, I think it's cool. We'll see how the rest of it goes.

So, where are the pictures of the progress?:) I think that some "accidents" in piecing are nice actually. It adds interest. When everything all works all the time, it can get kind of boring. Not that perfection is terrible, but it's just completely unattainable for me, so it makes me happy that accidents can be interesting.

maybe those "west virginia" quilts were imported from china? The ones I see in stores like Bed Bath and Beyond usually are.

I also suspsect that they were not handmade -- if you could buy the material wholesale and get a sweatshop to machine sew them, they'd probably be pretty cheap.

How is the stack & whack Christmas quilt coming along? I'm dying to see it. :) Hope you're having a great Advent season!

I will try to get some pictures posted this week of the stack-and-slash blocks. I'm just about ready to piece the top together...

Following up... I suppose that's true about the quilts I saw not being handmade and/or being made in a sweatshop. I don't recall whether there were any authenticity claims made about them - and they were all somewhat bland (at least to my eye..) That probably explains the prices.
