BCDC Operating Guidelines
As of June 2005

1. Discussions at BCDC meetings are confidential, not for quotation on personal websites, in the Post, or elsewhere, without permission. Use discretion ("my bookgroup hated the book x" is ok; "Lyn is allergic to Kristie's cooking" is not*); respect people's privacy; don't be a jerk.

2. BCDC will not read/discuss The Communist Manifesto as a selection.

3. John is not allowed to complain about the guidelines.#

4. Each member may nominate one or zero books for the next meeting that they believe fits the category and that they're willing to advocate for as a group selection.

5. There is no guideline #5.

6. The category for each meeting will be randomly chosen and announced by Lyn in advance.

7. We will vote using an instant runoff voting algorithm; Steve will count and calculate the votes.

8. New categories/topics for meetings may be suggested at each meeting and, upon general consensus, added to the list.

9. Potential invitees will be discussed and are subject to group approval at a meeting before invitations are issued.

10. It is acceptable to advocate for a nominated book by email.

11. There will be no vetos; it is expected that members will nominate books in good faith that they believe a) fit the category/topic and b) are likely to result in good BCDC discussion.

12. These guidelines are subject to change as the group evolves.

* Lyn is not allergic to Kristie's cooking.
# We do not expect this guideline to be adhered to. :)
