Preggers Update
Today's pregnancy update:How do you know you're in your 8th month of pregnancy? You try to leave your office at the end of the day (which is on the 9th floor) and have to stop to pee twice on your way out.
Bladder humor - when you've reached the point where you just succumb to all the indignities...
Sigh.

Actual incident in K's ninth month (the second pregnancy), which demonstrates the perils of elevators vs. stairs.
(K enters elevator. Just before doors close, another woman enters. The elevator starts down.)
(Woman glances casually at K. Her eyes widen.)
Woman: When are you due?
K (cheerfully): Tomorrow!
Woman: Oh.
(Elevator stops, not at anyone's floor, to pick up another passenger. Woman rushes out like a bee had just stung her.)

Siberian Kitties
Awhile back we ended up with a free subscription to Cat Fancy magazine for one reason or another. In the March 2008 issue they featured the "Siberian" cat breed. Reading through it, I realized that of all the cat breeds I've read about, our cats are closest to this one. (They are siblings and were adopted from a shelter - I think they're mutts, but the description of the Siberian breed matches closely - especially to my boy cat, Ubik.) Some snippets:"The fur is shorter on the shoulders and long and feathery on the stomach and britches. The article I'm quoting from doesn't seem to be available online, but there is this short profile.
Stocky, hefty, and muscular... with a sweet facial expression.
Eyes round, ears round, head round and muzzle round
Smart.. active and playful throughout their lives
Paws large and rounded with ample tufts of fur between the toes
A medium-large to large cat, with semi-long to long hair, depending on the season. Body is muscular, heavy-boned and of great strength. Head is a modified, rounded wedge with rounded ears and well-proportioned rounded eyes, giving an overall intelligent and sweet expression. There were several pictures in the article of Siberians that looked like Ubik, too. So cute. Anyway, here's my pseudo-Siberian shelter kitty:

John Legend - In the Name of Love
Found this over at Scalzi's - John Legend covers "Pride (In the Name of Love)" -- It is awesome. I love John Legend and I love this song. Not available as just a song on iTunes, though. Harrumph. I'd buy it, people, please let me exchange money for goods and services!April 5, 2008
Farewell, Cinba
One of my parents' kitties went to kitty heaven today - he had an aggressive cancer and had stopped eating. Poor baby. We are very sad.
If you have small furry mammals in your house, give them extra scritches today for Cinba-kitty.

Aaaw. Bye, Cinba.
Cinba bears an uncanny resemblance to the Squeaker, who went to kitty heaven earlier this year and was also referred to by such devilish nicknames from time to time.Posted by: Liz on April 5, 2008
:-( Oddly, he looks like a non-tricolor version of my own girl, Cinnabar. Hm.

aunty will miss him but he will be up in heaven with Tamby now.I lost my cat Tamby who was 21 years old last Feb. due to his age. He was a great hunter. Hopefully they get along. Because they both knew how to take care of themselves.

Whose Bodily Integrity Now, Mister?
Apart from the personal fun and unfun (mostly unfun) of pregnancy, there are of course huge politics associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. I have lots of opinions about most aspects (and did even before I was pregnant), and those aspects I don't have opinions about yet, I'm sure I will soon. But the biggie, when it comes to pregnancy in the United States, is of course the question of a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy. For the record, my own pregnancy (approaching 31 weeks) has only reinforced my views on this:No one should be forced or coerced by the state to be pregnant against their will.
I don't usually bother to read discussions about reproductive rights online much anymore - there is really nothing new under the sun, there. But, I was idly skimming this thread for some reason and was amused at one response to a guy (surely a guy) claiming that he's all about the pwecious babeeez...
Whatever works — as long as there are fewer abortions, I’m happy. If anyone’s “rights” get trampled on as a result of preventing that abortion, I really am not bothered by it. Now cry and moan.I thought the 'cry and moan' attempt at a coup de grace was telling, too, regarding this jerk's views on women who dare to assert their personhood. Anyway, the response was:
OK, here’s a suggestion. Every man could be forced to have a vasectomy. There could be a policy of storing several sperm samples before the procedure, or perhaps a system whereby one could apply for a temporary reversal in order to have a child. I think adopting such a policy would bring the abortion rate down to virtually zero, don’t you? So, given your insistence that it doesn’t matter whose rights get trampled on as long as the number of abortions is reduced, can we assume that you’d be entirely in favour of this?As we see over and over again, the promoted policies of the forced childbirth brigades are often in stark contrast to their supposed goals.

Speaking as a man, that last quote is now my new favorite argument. Brilliant.

Baseball Has Begun
The Washington Nationals opened their season at their new stadium on the Anacostia River Sunday night. By all accounts, it is a lovely and fun new place to go and spend wads of money (and to watch baseball). We didn't go - it's unlikely that we'll make it to a game this season, given the givens (although we may try to catch a minor league before I become completely ginormous). We did watch it on the television, though, and it was a good game, culminating in a stupid mistake by the Nationals' new catcher (former Met Paul LoDuca), which allowed the Braves to tie the game in the 9th. But then, Mr. "face of the franchise" Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs to win the game. Way to open the season, boys!
