John Legend - In the Name of Love

Found this over at Scalzi's - John Legend covers "Pride (In the Name of Love)" -- It is awesome. I love John Legend and I love this song. Not available as just a song on iTunes, though. Harrumph. I'd buy it, people, please let me exchange money for goods and services!

Lyrics of the Day

Two lyrics of the day, today, off the new Joe Jackson album "Rain." The first is from the song "King Pleasure Time":
King Pleasure - is on a mission
To take the power from the Pope and politicians
He's come to party - and he shows it
He rules the world but not everybody knows it
[...]
King Pleasure - is gonna get you
He don't give a damn about who wants to let you
They try to nag him - they try to scold him
They build cages but no one can ever hold him
He knows your secret - he's got your number
He'll stop you working but he'll stop you getting dumber

You wanna hold him - you wanna kiss him
You can deny it but it's futile to resist him
[...]
King Pleasure - will live forever
You can't control him though you think you're pretty clever
And after every computer crashes
He'll be laughing as he's dancing on your ashes

In King Pleasure Time
The second is from the last song on the album "A Place in the Rain":
Burn all the papers and burn all the wood
Burn what we can't understand
Run up a flag for the old neighbourhood
Sit back and then take my hand
It's amazing what lovers can do
With just a kiss and a glass of champagne

When the rivers run dry
We can go to our place in the rain
Pay off the piper and pay all the bills
Pay for the getaway car
Blow out the candles and head for the hills
Pray that we make it that far
Run from the poison and run from the flames
Run from the maddening crowd
Laugh at the whispers of who'll take the blame
And sing all the sinners out loud

Passings

I was very sad to read that Dan Fogelberg has died. And so young, too! That's just not right. When I'm in the right mood, his stuff makes me cry and cry. Was just listening to this song and started the waterworks:

Saffire at the Birchmere

Friday night I saw the group Saffire -- The Uppity Blues Women perform at the Birchmere. They were missing their pianist due to illness, so Deanna Bogart substituted with them. I really enjoyed them a lot and will be snatching up a bunch of their cds over the next little while. And listening to Deanna was amazing -- I'm going to get some of her cds as well. All I could say after listening to her riff around on the keyboard was "OMG, I NEED TO PRACTICE!" And then, of course, I start making the case to TheGuy again that we need to get a real piano. Of course, a pre-req to that is a bigger house, so it's going to be rather a little while before that happens (dive, housing market, dive, dive, dive!). Nevertheless, I claim there is a real difference in banging on real strings versus using an electronic piano (which we have now) even with weighted, pressure-sensitive keys. Anyway, that turned into some self-absorption (hey, it's a blog, waddya want?). The point is: Medley recommends both Saffire and Deanna Bogart if you want some fun bluesy stuff to listen to.

Lyric of the Day

We were recently doing a long-ish drive and I once again re-discovered that Don Henley makes some excellent driving/sing-along music. My favorite for the recent trip was "I Will Not Go Quietly."
I'm brave enough to be crazy
I'm strong enough to be weak
I see all these heroes with feet of clay
Whose mighty ships have sprung a leak
And I want you to tell me darlin'
Just what do you believe in now?

New Album from Roach

A.J. Roach's new album has finally been released stateside. It's called "Revelation." Favorite song on it so far for me is "Chemicals" which gives us today's lyric of the day:
Whiskey's my shepherd, oh and I shall not want.
It maketh me lay down in a strange woman's bed.
It maketh me talk out of both sides of my mouth.
Maketh me feel like I'd be better off dead

They say that love is just a chemical reaction,
I say that makes this all too hard to explain.
Chemicals for me have been my only safe bastion,
They maketh me numb when e'er they run through my veins

And I say that you are a like a river in my dreams,
Dark as a dungeon just as a deep as a seam.
I'm just a man charged with wading across it,
Love's a 50-pound weight paired with a 100-pound chain.
Very sad, but he does it so well. I can listen to it over and over. My second favorite song on this album (so far) is the title track. Some lyrics:
Well the rich man walks in darkness for he has not seen the light.
I will bridge them troubled waters with the saviour by my side.
And the rich man lives on quick sand, but my house is almost done.
It's a mansion in the sky where I can watch them sinners run,
When the revelation comes.
When the revelation comes.

When the revelation comes, we will see his will be done.
As in heaven shall be there right here on earth.
When the first shall be the last and the last shall be first.
Everyone is judged on what they're really worth, what they're really worth.
Both this album, and his first album, "Dogwood Winter" are excellent. Highly recommended.
